Brad photographed a Clay-colored Sparrow (Spizella pallida) as it perched in a tree located at the sewage treatment ponds in Junction, Texas. We were birding with the San Antonio Audubon Society the morning of Saturday, September 21, 2013. In addition to the treatment ponds, we birded a canyon area and private property near the LLano River. It proved to be a very birdy morning with five species of sparrows (Clay-colored, Savannah, Lark, House, and Black-throated). The highlight of the morning was a male Red-necked Phalarope at the treatment ponds. Temperatures were in the low to mid-60's on this blustery overcast morning. Note the bird's distinct, contrasting head stripes and supercilium. The side of the neck and nape are gray. A dark cheek patch is present. The bill and tarsi are a dull pink color.
